FSR Art Contest

We would like to thank everyone who entered our Art Contest this fall for their participation. Our judges had a hard time picking the winners from all the great entries. The winners of each category are listed below.

Paintings

Teresa Tallen. “This art piece featuring the turtle is called “longevity”. Turtles teach us about patience, stability, and grounding. The four symbols surrounding the turtle are the Sun, Moon, Earth, and Water. Together, everything has a connection. The material I used is deer skin which is wood burned, then it is painted. I wanted to use this trend to bring a natural feel as well as vibrancy to the home decor.”

Plants, Animals, & People

Steve Manders. “On the day that the winning photo was taken, there were a half dozen kayakers from Kingston. It is the most rugged stretch of local rapids. It was on a March 7, still winter time, that we paddled down Gull Creek to Sheffield Long Lake, then dragged our boats several km on the ice on the lake to get back to running waters. About half the group were women. Everyone was well experienced, and we all were properly dressed for the event, and knew every rock along the way. However, any mistake is most unforgiving in ice water, short days, slippery shores and no cell phone service. We thought we would have the river to ourselves, but then a dozen others showed up from Peterborough. That stretch of rapids ends just above Beaver Lake.”

Landscapes & Waterscapes

Mark Hopper. “There is in all human beings a deep connection with the natural environment that we sometimes get too busy to appreciate. My hope is that through my photography, people will rediscover the precious connection they can have with the wonders that surround us. I took that photo in Roblin at the bridge on Hwy 41.”

Kids 12 & Under

Killian Levac, age 8. “My favourite part is the turtle and the eggs.”
June, age 8. “A painting that represents how I like to watch and try to catch frogs with my brother and my neighbours.”
Arlo, age 6. “It’s a picture of the frogs that I see in the river at my house. There is water on the rocks that have algae.” Arlo and June live on the Salmon River.
